• Galu in Malawi•
It means dog in Chichewa, one of the languages of Malawi, and the one of Cape Maclear. The dogs always, close to the owners, wait for any kind of left overs as they just have nsima (ground maize). They are hungry all the time and you see them scavenging for food even inside the lake. Despite being hungry the dogs know they have to keep away from the goats, as if they would kill one of them the same fate will be waiting for them. As the owners never show any love or even nice behaviour to the dogs I wondered why they had so many of them, often 2 or 3 dogs per household. Why do they want that many dogs if they don't care about them? What are they useful for? For the hyenas and the monkeys. On top of the mountains surrounding Cape Maclear live the hyenas who, in the evenings, come down to the village looking for the goats and the chickens. The only thing that will keep away the hyenas are the dogs. Even little puppies are not safe at night time and cages are built for them. Secondly, to protect the maize and vegetable crops from the baboons and vervets. And if the dog catchs the monkey, there is lunch.
