MarEcoTel is currently conducting their second survey effort for a US Navy-supported pilot study off Monterey, CA that will continue through May 29th. This survey is focusing
effort on beaked whales which are known to be sensitive to military sonar activity. If successful, we hope to establish regular data collection in this area as a study site to compare animals around the Monterey Bay Sanctuary region where military sonar is not used with the Cuvier's beaked whales that inhabit the US Navy's Southern California Anti-submarine
Warfare Range off San Clemente Island, one of the most heavily used sonar training areas in the world.
In the first two days, we have documented six species including several sightings of humpback whales and fin whales as well as a sighting of Pacific white-sided dolphins, Risso's dolphins, one minke whale, and one transient killer whale.
