I remember going to Madeys by my great mother and roaming her lands picking and sucking cocoa. "Go on it have a lot on the tree! Danieeeeeellll go and pick a cocoa for the child to suck. Doh suck to much eh popo.. cocoa does give u short breath"
I would knock the pod against something hard, sometimes on the same tree trunk I picked it. All you can smell the sweet scent of the white flesh engulfing the shell of the raw chocolate.
I popped a few into my mouth and sucked the sweet flesh away. It was and still is soooo delicious.
My grandmother would save the shells and put them to dry in the sun. There's a traditional dance that my ancestors did over the dried cocoa to release or break it out of the shell. You can still go to Belmont estate to see it done.
But for my grandmother she broke it off her self and would season the raw chocolate with herbs and spices to make cocoa balls to make cocoa tea. A very rich and authentic way to make "hot chocolate". Which is a knock off to this drink. We would flock to kitchen just to have her cocoa tea. It was the best I've ever tasted.
I'm proud that I can say I've enjoyed chocolate in all its phases and deep culture.
